You Are Not So Smart – The Official Movie Trailer (for the book)

September 7, 2011

This is the first of two trailers for the book. I wanted the first video released to be something which could stand alone, something which would keep the tone and approach of the book. I also wanted it to be worth watching even if it wasn’t promoting something. I love it so much.

I hired Plus3 Productions to make it. From the beginning, I knew I wanted kenetic typography, and they delivered. Thank you! You should hire them to make something cool.

The trailer is all about procrastination, one of the most popular posts on the blog.

I hope you enjoy it, and if you do, please share it.

Interesting pronunciation of ‘want’, among others. I’ve not recognized that accent before, where is the speaker from?

    • September 9, 2011 11:41 pm

I was actually about to mention that it was solid over all except the accent was distracting mainly because it was only noticeable about a quarter of the time so i was constantly listening for it rather than paying attention

Nice trailer, but why are youtube comments turned off? You want people discussing and thinking about your video (and by extension your book).

  3. September 7, 2011 6:53 pm

    Haha. That’s a modern Southern U.S. accent.

  4. September 7, 2011 6:53 pm

    Turning on comments…now.

I have no words to tell how I identified myself in this video

This Video should be a Marketing 101 Tutorial:
It tells how good it understands the watcher and then tells you that can get more when buying this book… Hell, you could use the first Minutes and then go black “How to defeat Procrastination in 3 easy steps: order NOW”.

BUT: David, please make the iBook available in all iTunes stores, not only the American.

PLEASE make the book also available for the kindle. worldwide! Greetings from Germany

It’s not a very strong or deep southern accent, but it is also somewhat present in words that rhyme with “rise”, which come out at “rahz”. You have what some might call a “smart” Southern accent, since too many of us Northerners, to our shame, still equate a Southern drawl with slow-wittedness.

  7. September 7, 2011 7:06 pm

I just realized the what I thought was a walker from star wars was actually an Ostrich with its head in the ground on your front cover. I am not so smart.

  8. September 7, 2011 9:13 pm

I love the trailer but will I love the book? I might be persuaded to let my “Now You” choose it if it will be available on Kindle. Oh, oh, I hope that my future you doesn’t get there first! Perhaps I’m not so smart.

  9. September 7, 2011 11:11 pm

Very awesome trailer! I’m looking forward to the release! I hope that doesn’t mean that you will quit making blog posts ]:

You got me. Gonna order the book.

This is way too much kinetic typography in one video. It is entertaining for about 5 seconds at a time and then gets gimmicky, “doing it just because you can.” The actual graphical messages were great, just too many full sentences that the kinetic typing out didn’t add anything to. No matter, I ordered your book a while ago! I was convinced just by your site alone. I also should have started my work day 27 minutes ago, which is only too poetic :)

Haha. Thank you for spotting that. You wouldn’t believe how many people proofed this before I made it live. I’ve put in a request to have it repaired and a new copy sent to me for posting.

Very nice:-)! Thinking about using it as a daily mantra (that is, my present ME). I also have some other ideas (now while I’m procastrinating), but will see whether my future ME will WANT them with equal passion.:-).

  15. September 8, 2011 12:46 pm

    Repaired and reposted.

    I watch it later…

Just wanted to plug my related article about procrastination (and more generally, akrasia):

Love it. It’s always too early to start procrastinating.

I turned it off after a few seconds. That “kinetic typography” is not original. The first time it was done it was already old by the 4th second. Only “not so smart people” want to read flying letters of EXACTLY what they are hearing. Maybe a deaf person would like it too.

This trailer is really, really beautiful. Love your blog. Can’t wait for the book!

  24. September 10, 2011 11:10 am

Hmm… watching this reminds me I should stop reading this blog or working on my site and get on with the other stuff that actually pays the bills.

Nice advert, although perhaps a little busy. It worked better when I was listening rather than watching.

Will the book be a compendium of your blog posts, or have you crafted it in such a way that it works together a single book? Hope that doesn’t sound like a loaded question – either one is cool.

  27. September 12, 2011 1:23 am

    Fantastic. Can’t wait!

  28. September 12, 2011 4:25 am

Really cool trailer! Although it’s hard to find something novel. I wanna give this book a chance anyway and I’m going to buy it.

That was as profound as any psychology related scholarly article that I have put before my eyes in the past couple of years.

    Bravo.

I’ll be pimping you from my website and social media for a while, I’m sure.

“Big pimpin, spending the G’s.” Sorry, that was inappropriate. I agree with Zac though. Looks like an awesome book worth talking about. Really enjoyed the trailers as well!
